Joining the Team
We're looking for Cochise County residents with grit, reliability, and a willingness to train hard. No prior search-and-rescue experience is required — if you bring the commitment, the team will train you the rest of the way.
Who makes a good volunteer
SAR work happens in the dark, in the heat, and on short notice. The skills can be taught — the character can't. If you're dependable, level-headed, and ready to show up when your neighbors need help, you'll fit right in. Most of what you need to meet the call:
- At least 18 years old
- Cochise County resident, or close enough to respond reliably
- Physically fit and comfortable on rough terrain
- Dependable — able to answer call-outs and show up when it counts
- Able to commit to monthly trainings and ongoing skill-building
- A valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- A clean background check (required for Sheriff's Office affiliation)
How to join
Apply
Request and submit an application. Tell us a little about yourself, your availability, and why you want to serve. This kicks off your background check with the Sheriff's Office.
Orientation & interview
Sit down with our coordinators to learn how the team operates, ask questions, and make sure SAR is the right fit for you. We'll walk you through expectations, training, and gear.
Probationary training
New members start a probationary period of hands-on training — navigation, search techniques, and field skills — alongside experienced volunteers until you're mission-ready.
Ready to take the first step?
If you've got the drive, we'll teach you the rest. Reach out and we'll get an application into your hands.
